Red light therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to support the body's natural cellular healing processes. Many individuals seek red light therapy to help with pain, inflammation, circulation, and tissue recovery. It can be used as a complementary treatment alongside other occupational therapy techniques, depending on your individual needs and goals. At Hand in Hand Occupational Therapy, our therapists will evaluate your condition and determine whether red light therapy may be an appropriate part of your treatment plan.
How It Works
Red light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation, delivers low levels of light energy into the skin and underlying tissues. Research suggests this light is absorbed by the mitochondria within cells, which may increase cellular energy production, reduce inflammation, and improve local blood flow. Treatment is painless, does not produce heat damage to the skin, and typically takes only a few minutes per session.
Conditions Red Light Therapy May Help
Research on photobiomodulation has shown promising results for a range of conditions commonly treated in hand and upper extremity therapy, including:
Tendinitis and tendinopathy, including tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) and de Quervain's tenosynovitis
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Osteoarthritis of the hand, wrist, and other joints
Neck and shoulder pain
Post-surgical healing, including incision and wound healing
Peripheral nerve pain and neuropathy
Muscle pain and stiffness
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), as part of a comprehensive treatment plan
